Bio | I am historian in residence at The Little Museum of Dublin on St Stephen’s Green. I earned my B.A. in English and History, as well as my M.A. in Medieval Studies, at University College Dublin. My doctoral research was completed in the School of Histories and Humanities, Trinity College Dublin. My doctoral thesis examined chroniclers’ and historians’ attitudes towards Ireland and its people during Plantagenet rule in England, c. 1169–c. 1252. I offer services in historical research and consultancy. Most recently, I was academic researcher on the historical documentary The United Irishmen, directed by acclaimed Irish director Alan Gilsenan. The United Irishmen premiered at the Cork International Film Festival in November 2023. Aside from my historical research, I am interested in academic governance, pedagogy, and public outreach. |
Areas of expertise | My primary area of expertise is Anglo-Irish relations and history in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Additionally, I have specialist knowledge in a number of auxilliary areas including the history of interactions between the various peoples of medieval Ireland and Britain; and the intellectual thought which influenced the represention of foreigners within the contexts of twelfth- and thirteenth-century Europe. I am also an experienced researcher in later periods of Irish history, including the seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries (see my ‘Experience’ section for further details). As a historical consultant, I have completed extensive archival work on Henry Sheares (1753–1798) and John Sheares (1766–1798), United Irishmen and barristers who were executed for high treason on 14 July 1798. |
