IAPH Teaching History Workshop, 6 December 2018, Mary Immaculate College

A half-day workshop on the theme of ‘Teaching History’ will take place in the Tara Building at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick (Room T211) on Thursday 6 December 2018. The workshop will begin at 1pm and conclude with a keynote address by Dr Gillian O’Brien, Reader in Modern Irish History at Liverpool John Moores University.

The workshop will discuss the teaching of History at primary, secondary, and third level, as well as outside the formal education system. On the one hand, speakers will discuss policy and curriculum developments over the history of the state. On the other, we will think about ways in which public history, material culture, and the digital space can inform History teaching today. Dr O’Brien’s keynote will reflect more broadly on the value of teaching History, particularly in the context of the removal of History as a core subject in the Junior cycle.

Speakers include Colm MacGearailt (TCD), Dr Darragh Gannon (QUB and IAPH committee), Dr Eilis O’Sullivan (MIC), and Dr Grace O’Keeffe (Maynooth).
