Alessandro Portelli is a renowned oral historian. He is professor of Anglo-American literature in the University of Rome La Sapienza as well as a musicologist. He founded the Cicolo Gianni Bosio, an activist collective focused on oral history, folklore and culture. Portelli served as the Mayor of Rome’s advisor for historical memory from 2002-2008 and as a city councillor in Rome from 2006-2007. His book The Death of Luigi Trastulli (1991) is regarded as a seminal work in oral history, emphasising memory based history and the meaning and nature of memories.
